This is What we do:

The Project for Public Places says that great public spaces are "those places where celebrations are held, social and economic exchanges occur, friends run into each other, and cultures mix." One of the key elements for success that is identified is that a space be comfortable and has a good image. The Main Street program's focus on Design in the district works to further exactly those principles. The photo above captures some examples of our efforts to make downtown appealing and comfortable:

1) The MVDA purchased 13 metal benches downtown that match the street furniture used on the Riverwalk Plaza, providing places in each block for visitors to rest and relax.

2) The MVDA purchased the hardware necessary for hanging baskets and street pole banners on the downtown light poles. We have purchased seasonal banners, and our community partners also use the banner brackets; i.e., the MVHS Senior Bulldogs banners.

3) The MVDA purchases the hanging flower baskets that line South 1st Street every year, with gratitude to our partnership with MV Parks for providing installation and watering services.

4) The MVDA manages and raises funds for the Building Vibrance program, which lights up the street trees during the darker months, providing a sense of beauty, warmth and safety in the district.

5) The MVDA periodically cleans and paints the steps and columnar structure near the Jasper Gates statue at the intersection of Gates and S. 1st Street, and paid to repair/restore electricity to the columns.

6) The MVDA hosts community clean-up days to keep our streetscape and alleys clean and inviting for all.
